Cosmic Veil

The awe-inspiring beams of the Aurora Australis dance across the sky, producing an out of this world display of natural beauty.  This was the second massive geo-magnetic storm of the year and, after reviewing the images I had taken during the first one a few months earlier, I wasn't happy with the composition I had settled on.  If truth be told, I think I was just overwhelmed with the excitement of actually seeing this phenomenon from my own back yard, rather than having to travel to nearer the North or South pole.  As a result, when the alerts began appearing advising of another solar flare, and consequently a good probability of an aurora, I took the time to scout a less complicated scene.  I drove most of the dirt tracks on the Bellarine Peninsula and knew this lone tree would make for a great subject, silhouetted against the sky.  So, when it became dark, I headed straight here and set up my gear making sure to carefully adjust my position to ensure the tree was in just the right position.  Unfortunately after about 30 minutes the bank of cloud snuffed out any colour in the sky but not before I was able to capture this majestic scene.
